When I bought Frosty, I was bitten by the Appaloosa bug. If you know your horse breeds, you know that Appaloosas are not known for their luscious locks! In fact, they’re known for their lack thereof. However, there is hope! After doing some research, I was able to make DIY mane and tail conditioner that has significantly grown his forelock! I’m happy to share my little secret to help you grow your horse’s mane and forelock. No chemicals needed for this recipe! It’s all natural!

The Details

I’ve been an avid user of essential oils at home for years! In the past few years, I’ve also taken to using them at the farm for both my personal horse as well as my customers. I decided to try this recipe for mane and tail conditioner, not expecting to see too much improvement, but figured it was worth a shot. So I took a before photo JUST to see if I could tell a difference. After roughly 3 months, I took the 2nd photo above – I was amazed to see that Frosty’s forelock had actually grown and appeared much fuller!

Some Important Tips for Making Mane and Tail Conditioner

Here are some important tips for making this simple recipe. Be sure to use a tinted glass bottle when using essential oils in any recipe. If you were to use plastic, the pure essential oils would eventually cause the plastic to deteriorate. Similarly, if the bottle used is NOT tinted glass, the sun’s UV rays will cause the essential oils to deteriorate, thus rendering them less effective. I like to use these bottles shown above.

It is also extremely important that when you use essential oils for anything, you’re using certified pure tested grade oils! Those grocery store “essential oils” are not tested, nor do we know where they were sourced. I recommend only using oils that come from a CPTG company. I want to know that the oil I’m using is actually what I think it is! If you are interested in learning more about this, I’m always happy to share! I can also help you get wholesale pricing on CPTG oils from Doterra. This is my preferred brand of essential oil.

The Recipe

3 parts castor oil

1 part olive or fractionated coconut oil (whichever you have on hand)

15 drops of Rosemary essential oil

15 drops of Lavendar essential oil

Mix all ingredients in a tinted 4 oz glass bottle. Apply to mane and forelock 2-3 times weekly. A little goes a long way with this conditioner; it’s thick! Start with less!

I can’t wait for you to try this recipe to grow your own horse’s forelock and mane. If you do, please comment and let me know what you think! Don’t forget those before and after photos! While you wait for the mane to grow, check out my post below on winter activities to do with your horse!
